Chippa United announce new signings and departures in their first press conference ahead of the Maize Cup on Saturday.
On Wednesday, 11 July Chippa United announced the signing of midfielder, Daine Klate on free transfer after his contract at Bidvest Wits expired last month.
The 33-yearl old was unveiled at a press conference in Port Elizabeth, where the club also announced other new signings and departures, and also revealed Joma as their technical sponsor this season.
The former Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits star was reportedly in talks with the Chilli Boys before his term with the Students came to an end.
Chippa also secured the services of former Wits midfielder, Jabulani Shongwe, who spent the previous season on loan at Golden Arrows, and saw his contract with the Clever Boys expire in June.
Other Chippa United signings include former Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Thabo Nthethe, ex-Ajax Cape Town midfielder, Ruzaigh Gamildien, Tebogo Makobela from Jomo Cosmos, as well as Thatoyaone Kgamanyane and Kabelo Seakanyeng from Botswana.
According to Chippa United COO, Lukanyo Mzinzi “A few influential players left the club at the of the season. Paseko Mako, Linda Mntambo and Abel Mabaso to Orlando Pirates. While Mxolisi Macuphu, Brighton Mhlongo and Bantu Mzwakali to Bidvest Wits.”
Head coach, Dan Malesela also weighed in on the club’s new signings and their intentions to win trophies during the new season.
“There are certain bonds that one just can’t break, and I’m excited to be back at Chippa United FC.”
“We were very careful with our selection [of signings] this season. We didn’t only take the talent factor into consideration. We also looked at behaviour, age and a real want from the player to be at the Club.”
“I’m not going to make any promises about the upcoming season, but we are going to try our best. We’d like to compete on the continent, and win silverware,” Malesela said.
Chippa United will take on FreeState Stars in the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup on Saturday, 14 July 2018 as part of their pre-season training.
