The DA has welcomed the JSC’s decision to have Judge John Hlophe impeached, as he faces removal from the National Assembly, confirming its vote in full support of this decision.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) issued a statement on Thursday, 26 August 2021, by its Shadow Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, welcoming the decision by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to uphold the recommendation on Judge John Hlophe. Hlophe is at risk of impeachment and suspension.
The DA Shadow Minister noted that Hlophe has been found guilty by a Judicial Conduct Tribunal of attempting to influence Constitutional Court Judges, Chris Jafta and Bess Nkabinde, in 2008. This was allegedly to rule in favour of former president, Jacob Zuma in his corruption trial with the French arms company, Thales. Breytenbach stated that the DA has viewed the JSC’s decision as a victory for the rule of law and the significance of judicial independence, and that although it has taken nearly 13 years to get to this point of Hlophe being held accountable, the DA is in full support of his impeachment and his removal from the National Assembly.
The DA believes that Hlophe’s suspension is one of vital importance to protect the independence and status of the judiciary, with it being under more scrutiny than ever before.
