DA rejects proposed use of COVID-19 relief funds on SAA

Published on

The DA has expressed strong opposition to the proposal of using COVID-19 relief funds to provide a financial boost to the ailing national carrier, SAA.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) enlisted Shadow Minister of Finance, Geordin Hill-Lewis on Monday, 28 September 2020, to share the party’s stance on the proposed use of COVID-19 relief funds on South African Airways (SAA). According to the DA, the crippled parastatal has already received some R57 billion in rescue funding.

The DA claims that further investment in the parastatal would be fruitless. Further, in the video statement by the party, it suggested that the funds would be better used to improve the state of the public servants sector. The leading opposition party’s stance is to have South Africans participate in a public hearing to suggest a better use of the funds, to ensure that no funds are allocated to SAA.
