DA raises concerns over progress on NCGBVF

The DA has come out strongly against the government for its alleged deceit regarding the NCGBVF, after Maite Nkoana-Mashabane conceded that there is no budget for the formation of the council.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement on Wednesday, 7 October 2020, confronting the alleged deceit by the government and endorsed by the Department of Women, Children and Persons with Disability.

The statement alleges that the department’s Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane recently conceded that there is no budget for the formation of the National Council of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NCGBVF). Moreover, that “there is no timeframe on the legislation of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).”

The statement went on to claim, “It is unacceptable that womxn and members of the LGBTQIA+ community continue to be left alone in the cold, murdered and abused, while the government drags its feet.”

The DA has appealed to the department to fulfil its promises on the formation of the legislation of the NSP, which has allegedly not even started. Moreover, for the department to allocate enough budget for the formation of the NCGBVF.
