The DA is continuing to apply pressure on Stellenbosch University to reverse its prohibition of Afrikaans as the primary language of instruction, doing so through a petition.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) took to Twitter on Monday, 22 March 2021, to circulate a post promoting the petition it has created against Stellenbosch University’s decision not to reverse its stance on Afrikaans. Before 2016, Afrikaans was the primary language of instruction for most of the university’s courses.
However, following the wave of students protests in various parts of the country, the university prohibited Afrikaans as the primary language of instruction. The DA initially attempted to have a civil talk with the university to have the matter reversed, however, it did not yield fruitful results for the party.
Soon after, the leading opposition party announced the legal action it is now pursuing against the institution, suggesting the prohibition is an infringement on the use of mother-tongue languages in tertiary institutions. However, the matter has not been heard yet and the petition is one of the ways that the party is looking to raise awareness on the matter.
See the post below.
