DA petitions to have the ANC prioritise farm attacks

Published on

The DA has created a petition to have farm killings considered a priority crime, following Bheki Cele’s address in KZN, in which he allegedly downplayed the phenomenon.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Minister of State Security, Dianne Kohler Barnard is leading the charge to have the African National Congress (ANC) consider farm killings and attacks a priority crime. The leading opposition party announced the petition in a YouTube video on Tuesday, 22 September 2020. The party noted that once it has amassed enough signatures, it the petition will be handed over to the government to hopefully have the phenomenon considered a priority crime.

Moreover, the party has gone on to create a donation account to “fund [the] Court Watching Briefs Unit which monitors every farm attack court case to ensure attackers end up behind bars.”

The reaction follows Minister of Police, Bheki Cele’s recent address in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where he allegedly asserted that farm attacks and killings are not considered a priority crime by the ruling party and, in extension, the government.
