The DA’s Johannesburg caucus took to Twitter to circulate a petition in opposition to the proposed name change of William Nicol Drive, claiming that it would be wasteful and pointless expenditure.
The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Johannesburg caucus took to Twitter on Monday, 12 April 2021, to express its stance on the proposed name change of regional road, William Nicol Drive. The state has proposed changing the road to Winnie Madikizela Mandela Drive. The caucus has created a petition in opposition to the suggested name change.
The DA stated, “There are numerous costs associated with a renaming, not only to the City, but also to business and other stakeholders. South Africa is experiencing an economic crisis, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Businesses, especially SMMEs, are suffering with many having to reduce their workforce or even close their doors. It is unthinkable that the City would resolve to add a further burden on businesses.”
Moreover, the DA noted, “There must not be a duplication of names. Four schools, a clinic, a Taxi Rank and a street are named after NW Madikizela-Mandela within the jurisdiction of Johannesburg.”

❗️The ANC is on a mission to rename WILLIAM NICOL DR after Winnie Mandela. In a time of economic crisis why spend taxpayer money on this ⁉️We call on residents to sign this petition and stop this illegal and pointless name change❗️ https://t.co/j9YyuIFRSV 🖌
