Leon Schreiber took to Twitter to confirm that the DA has laid charges against Stellenbosch University for its prohibition of the use of Afrikaans as the primary language of instruction.
The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Minister of Public Service and Administration, Leon Schreiber took to Twitter on Thursday, 18 March 2021, to announce that the party has laid charges against Stellenbosch University (SU). The DA has opted to pursue legal action against the university for its hard stance to continue prohibiting the use of Afrikaans as the primary language of instruction.
A week earlier, a delegate of the DA that was spearheaded by Federal Leader, John Steenhuisen, visited the university to attempt to reach common ground. However, it seems that the institution was resolute on maintaining the prohibition. While it is unclear why the university has decided to stand firm in its decision, the ongoing student protests are believed to be amongst the reasons for its stance.
Schreiber made it clear that the party “will not rest until mother-tongue education is respected like any other human right.” However, as was highlighted by some social media users when the party had initiated the discussion, the Western Cape has three commonly spoken languages, with isiXhosa and English said to be more commonly used than Afrikaans.
