Patricia de Lille says her party is doing everything it can to oust her, after the DA approved a recall clause during its elective conference on 7-8 April 2018.
In a series of tweets from her official Twitter account, the City of Cape Town Mayor, Patricia de Lille, criticised the clause saying that it is another attempt by her opponents within the party to get rid of her.
Writing, “It is no secret that there are individuals in the Democratic Alliance (DA) who have been trying to get rid of me at any cost for the last few months.”
“Changing their own Federal Constitution through the newly passed “De Lille Clause” shows just how far they are willing to go to avoid their own due process,” she added.
The DA has previously accused de Lille of corruption and mismanagement including security upgrades at her home.
In February 2018, de Lille survived a motion of no confidence against her in the Cape Town council. She is also facing alleged criminal charges against her brought forward by her party.
The Mayor denied these claims again saying that the country’s laws will protect her.
“I have been fighting for a fair and transparent process amidst the slew of allegations that have been thrown my way. The DA should be aware, that even if they refuse to allow due process in the spirit of fairness, the laws of our country protect public representatives,” the tweet reads.
Commenting on the recall clause after the elective congress DA leader, Mmusi Maimane said that although the clause would apply immediately, it would only be used in future cases.
