DA confident Western Cape will contain further COVID-19 outbreaks

Published on

The DA has released a statement after the president’s latest lockdown update, stating that it has full confidence in the Western Cape Government to contain any further outbreaks in the Garden Route area.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) took to Twitter on Thursday, 3 December 2020, to circulate a statement on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lockdown update. The statement, penned by John Steenhuisen, acknowledged that the president did not, as many had feared, implement stricter lockdown restrictions nationally, but opted to do so in hotspots only.

The DA previously expressed opposition to the suggestion that the country may revert to a full lockdown again, which would further devastate the economy. This is something that Ramaphosa categorically stated he would try to avoid. Moreover, the party acknowledged that Ramaphosa did mention that the Garden Route in the Western Cape is a high-risk area. However, unlike the restrictions he announced for Nelson Mandela Bay, he did not do the same for the Garden Route.

In response, the DA noted, “With regards to the rising numbers of infections in the Garden Route area, we have full confidence in the preparation and capacity of the Western Cape Government to identify and contain any further outbreaks or hotspots as we go into this crucial holiday season.”
