DA claims ANC is looking to cover up COVID-19 corruption

Published on

The DA has issued a statement alleging that the ruling party is looking to cover up its reported COVID-19 corruption through blocking parliamentary oversight of the investigation.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement on Monday, 14 September 2020, speculating that there are already plans by the ruling party to cover up the reported COVID-19 corruption. The DA alleged that through the use of Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modise, the African National Congress (ANC) will attempt to prevent the creation of a parliamentary oversight committee to look into allegations of COVID-19 corruption.

The leading opposition party detailed how it had proposed the creation of the parliamentary committee, however, no response has been received from Modise yet. The party then drew comparisons between Modise’s alleged silence and that of former Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete’s resistance to create an ad-hoc committee on Nkandla. The statement hopes to put public pressure on Modise to respond favourably to the DA’s proposed measures.
