DA calls out Cele for failing to address Walmer killings during NMB visit

Published on

The DA has called out the Minister of Police for visiting Nelson Mandela Bay with expressed intention to address the Walmer killings matter, only to end up campaigning.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Police, Andrew Whitfield issued a statement on Friday, 15 October 2021, claiming that the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele snubbed the killings that took place in Walmer Township in the Nelson Mandela Bay, to campaign in Korsten instead. The DA noted that Cele touched down in the Bay with what it has described as a battalion of heavily armed police officers, with the expressed intention to address the recent outbreak of violence in the Walmer Township and Korsten.

It also alleged that instead of visiting the Walmer Township, Minister Cele targeted law-abiding business owners through what appeared to be an unlawful search and seizure operation, according to the party. The opposition party is calling Cele’s visit to the Bay blatant electioneering on a highly sensitive and volatile issue, while ignoring the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) failures in Walmer.
