DA calls for EFF’s sanction by IEC for alleged election gathering violations

The DA has confirmed that it served the IEC with notice of the “illegal” campaigning by the EFF, which allegedly violated election rules, calling for the party’s sanction.

Chief Whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Natasha Mazzone issued a statement on Monday, 27 September 2021, stating that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has no choice but to sanction the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for what the DA believes to have been illegal campaigning by the opposition party. Mazzone confirmed that the DA served the IEC with a notice of the alleged illegal campaigning, unlawful electoral behaviour and the criminal violation of gathering rules by the EFF on Sunday, 26 September 2021.

She further referred to its illegal campaign as a COVID-19 superspreader event. According to Mazzone, the IEC has no choice but to sanction the EFF for breaking the law and rules of the election, and urged that it not show any favour or partisanship to the EFF as it needs to be held accountable.
