Cyril Ramaphosa zooms in on impact of COVID-19 on the media

Published on

Cyril Ramaphosa’s latest weekly newsletter detailed some of the matters that were discussed in the Question and Answer session with SANEF last week, in which the impact of COVID-19 on the media was highlighted.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s weekly newsletter on Monday, 14 September 2020, detailed the topics of discussion from his session with the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) on Wednesday, 9 September 2020. The impact of the global pandemic on local media and journalism was one of the pertinent issues, as the pandemic led to the closure of multiple media entities, ultimately resulting in job losses. As remedial action, the newsletter suggests continued efforts to revive the publication and press industry.

This comes after the president issued a statement on Friday, 11 September 2020, over the matter of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Airforce jet being used by the ruling party’s delegation for a “fact-finding mission” in Zimbabwe with ZANU-PF. The president has asked Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to submit a report on the flight and the passenger list. Findings from the report are yet to be publicised.
