Cuthbert confirms hijacking of courier service delivering sensitive NLC documents

Published on

The DA’s Cuthbert has confirmed that the courier service sent to deliver sensitive documentation relating to the NLC was hijacked by gunmen outside the party’s head office.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mathew Cuthbert issued a statement on Tuesday, 14 September 2021, informing of a hijacking incident that took place at the DA Federal Head Office in Cape Town on Monday, 13 September 2021. Cuthbert confirmed that following the party’s Promotion of Access to Information (PAIA) application to obtain information related to a service provider contracted by the National Lotteries Commission to advise the commission on how to distribute COVID-19 relief, the courier service that had arrived to deliver the documents containing the information was hijacked.

Cuthbert also noted that the party found it very suspicious that gunmen would intercept information the NLC had been reluctant to hand over. Therefore, it is of the belief that the incident could have been orchestrated, raising concerns around the security and safety of Cuthbert and that of whistleblowers.
