A simple social media notice confirmed the ending of the once popular soapie, Muvhango.
On Tuesday, 2 July 2024, the Muvhango team took to social media platform, X, to announce the unexpected end of Muvhango, which was one of the staples of South Africa’s soap drama diet.
The announcement confirmed the rumours that circulated in latter part of June 2024, that the 2 July 2024 wedding episode would be the last, an effective finale and sunsetting of the show’s production after 27 years.
The announcement, which merely stated “End of the Road for Muvhango, thank you for watching all these years” came as a shock to the show’s faithful, who were still frantically waiting for the July 2024 teasers and spoilers.
However, for many, the announcement was somewhat expected. The 2 July 2024 episode, which featured Reneilwe and Kgosi’s wedding, was long understood to be the season finale, but the niggling point was whether the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) would renew the show for another season.
And judging from the notice by the Muvhango team, SABC has chosen not to renew, thereby marking the end of the soapie’s 27-year run.
Social media chatter following the announcement is mixed, with some feeling Muvhango still had two or more seasons in it, and with some feeling it outlived its purpose.
Indeed, the once popular show put the Venda language and Venda culture on South African screens at a time when there were few Venda shows and TV characters, but in latter years, the show saw the watering down of Venda culture and its mainstreaming as an attempt to appeal to wider audiences, which saw it struggle for relevance, especially with the proliferation of new soapies, which took on similar narratives of crime and business empires.
With no distinguishing features and increasing stale and predictable plot lines, Muvhango lost its popularity and saw it reduced from five episodes a week to just three, signalling its inevitable demise, which has now come to pass.
