Creepy movies to watch this Friday the 13th

Stay in on the unluckiest day of the year or risk it all by going out to the cinema.

For those who are superstitious, Friday the 13th is associated with mishap, hazard and fright.

Friday the 13th is commonly known as the unluckiest day of the year. In 2018, we are set to endure two of these unlucky days, April 13 and July 13.

The phobia of Friday the 13th is known as ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ from the Greek.

The superstition around this day has sparked the creation of a torrent of cultural by-product’s. As a result, Friday the 13th has become a symbol of popular culture which comes with its own popular references.

Films franchises like Friday the 13th have also established the day as a trope of the horror film genre.

If you subscribe to the hype around this day, perhaps you might choose to stay indoors away from ladders, black cats and mirrors.

If you dare to indulge in the creepiness of the day, (from the safety of your couch, of course), Showmax S.A. has a Friday the 13th movie collection just for you.

The collection is made up of ten horror genre films. These include, Insidious, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Paranormal Activity.

For fans of hybrid genre films, Pans Labyrinth is a great watch. This fantasy-horror plays with the distinctions between fantasy and reality that so often plague childhood nightmares.

Horror-spoof aficionados will be pleased by the inclusion of the Addams Family franchise.

Alternatively, if you are willing to brave the outside world there are currently two horror genre films on show at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas.

A Quite Place

This horror is about a family that lives an isolated existence in utter silence, for fear of an unknown threat that follows and attacks at any sound.

Winchester

This horror which stars Helen Mirren is inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world.

Whichever way you choose to commemorate this unlucky day, stay safe and enjoy yourself.
