Could Donald Trump be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?

South Korea’s leader thinks that President Donald Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize – here’s why.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in suggested that US President Donald Trump should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

Moon’s praise of President Donald Trump came in response to the US leaders’ efforts to end hostilities between the two Korean state’s. The Trump administration has led a global effort to impose stricter sanctions on North Korea.

Although, the US president has previously come under fire for baiting the totalitarian Kim Jong-un, he has now become engaged in negotiations between the two Korea’s to denuclearise the North Korean peninsula.

Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in met last week, 27 April 2018 for a private meeting. It has been fifty years since a North Korean leader set foot in South Korea, making this a monumental event.

President Trump is set to meet with Kim Jong-un in three to four weeks’ time. Trump suggested that the meeting take place at the Peace House on the border between North and South Korea.

The world waits with baited breath for the outcome of this meeting. President Trump is not known for his tact, leaving many worried that he may escalate tensions.

Moon on Trump

Back in January, Moon Jae-in said of President Donald Trump:

“Trump deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks. It could be a resulting work of the U.S.-led sanctions and pressure”.

Now Moon Jae-in has received a congratulatory message from Lee Hee-ho, the widow of late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung after his meeting with Kim Jong-un. She said that Moon deserved to win a Nobel Peace Prize for facilitating the negotiations. The president responded by saying that in fact President Trump deserves the win.

Why President Trump is unlikely to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

The requirements to win a Nobel Peace Prize are as follows:

The Peace Prize is awarded to “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

It may be awarded to an individual or an organisation. The award may be presented for both accomplishments or intentions.

President Donald Trump is unlikely to be considered for the prestigious award as he has not yet achieved denuclearisation in North Korea. Furthermore, his true contribution to the resulting peace talks is debatable.

The Nobel Committee considers a person’s long-term commitment to global peace. They would hardly overlook President Trump’s other unpopular standpoints about the United Nations, global warming and international law.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced this Friday, 4 May 2018.

It is uncertain whether President Donald Trump has been nominated this year, since the Committee does not itself announce the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves.
