COSATU mobilises members for SABC protest action

Published on

COSATU hosted a press conference calling for its constituencies nationwide to picket outside the SABC offices, in light of the impending retrenchments.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) took to Twitter on Friday, 20 November 2020, to encourage members to partake in the national strike action against the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The strike action is over the proposal by the public broadcaster to retrench an estimated 400 employees, as part of its restructuring and cost-cutting methods.

COSATU initially released a joint statement with the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), as the Secretariat Alliance, opposing the planned retrenchments. The SABC has since temporarily suspended the signing of the retrenchments for seven days. However, employees are not satisfied, as the move can be interpreted as a delay tactic for the uproar to die down.

This is partly why the strike action endorsed by COSATU is scheduled to continue as planned. COSATU has called on its members to picket at SABC offices nationally, with the main strike action taking place at the SABC headquarters in Auckland Park.
