COSATU has enlisted the SACP for its scheduled protest action against the reported backlash that it has received for its collective bargaining efforts.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) took to Twitter Tuesday, 1 December 2020, to reveal that it has enlisted the South African Communist Party (SACP) for its planned collective bargaining protest action. The addition of the SACP to the protest action is meant to highlight the importance of unions representing different professions coming together to oppose labour inequalities.
COSATU and the SACP are just two of the three bodies that are part of the tripartite alliance, along with the ruling party. Therefore, the enlisting of the SACP for the upcoming protest action shifts the context.
A recent example of such is the ongoing matter of the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) proposed retrenchments. When staffers started their demonstration, it was purely a labour matter, however, with the involvement of the tripartite alliance, the matter was arguably a power play that is still playing out.
Therefore, it will be of interest to see how the protest action, scheduled for Friday, 4 December 2020, will play out. The protest action is set to start at 09:00 at the Union Buildings.
