The Competition Tribunal has announced that it approved a merger between Super Group Holdings and Regional Wholesale Service, with Super Group to exercise control over Regional Wholesale.
The Competition Tribunal issued a statement on Friday, 22 October 2021, confirming that it unconditionally approved the large merger that will see Super Group Holdings (SGH) acquire Regional Wholesale Service (RWS). Post-merger, Super Group Holdings will exercise control over Regional Wholesale Service.
The tribunal confirmed that it concluded that the merger was unlikely to lead to a substantial prevention or reduction of competition in any relevant market in South Africa. This being because merger parties’ combined market shares in affected markets would be relatively low, and other players would constrain merger parties.
It also found that the proposed transaction will not raise any public interest concerns. The merger parties are said to have submitted that there will be no retrenchments as a result of the merger. The proposed merger is also set to allow growth that will increase independent courier services businesses.
