Chadian President Idriss Déby has called on his compatriots to adopt a new culture of civic responsibility.
In a New Year’s eve message to the nation on Monday, 31 December 2018, from his hometown of Amdjarass, in northeast Chad, President Déby said that the gigantic scale of the projects that “await us requires a flawless mobilization, an exemplary patriotic commitment and a new culture of responsibility.”
He promised that the coming year will be a pivotal one for the battle to institute structural transformation of Chad’s economy, adding that economic diversification must be a reality to boost growth, which will witness a 6.9 percent increase in the new year.
On the political front, President Déby confirmed the holding of legislative and communal elections, calling on the electoral team that will be set up to get to work resolutely to organise the polls before the end of the first half of the new year.
Déby reassured government workers that the signed agreement will be respected.
“I would like to reassure all public sector workers that the commitments contained in the agreement will be respected. Better still, other actions to further improve living and working conditions will be considered as the effects of the economic situation fade,” he said.
He added: “We have a civic obligation to consolidate social peace to better optimize the performance and ensure the effectiveness of our schools, hospitals and various public services. In the future, we must give priority to dialogue and avoid at all costs these repeated strikes that are delaying our economic progress. The development of our republic also naturally requires stability, social cohesion and security. These values are, of course, essential ferments that determine the success of renewal projects.”
According to Déby, it is the duty “of the entire nation to commit to civic responsibilities so that cordial understanding and fraternal union will be a daily concern.”
