Minister Bheki Cele has revealed that he paid a visit to the family of the late Mthokozisi Ntumba, further claiming that his death is currently being investigated.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) took to Twitter on Thursday, 11 March 2021, to share visuals of Minister of Police, Bheki Cele visiting the family of the late Mthokozisi Ntumba. Ntumba was the innocent bystander that succumbed to multiple rubber bullet shots, as police officers allegedly tried to disperse the Wits protesters.
According to the visuals shared, Cele appears to have had an opportunity to meet with the family. Thereafter, he took the time to speak to members of the press. However, he did not discuss in detail the conversation he had with the family.
Whilst addressing the media, he confirmed that the SAPS has launched an investigation into the matter. However, at the moment, there are no leads. Moreover, it is believed that the SAPS is currently working on better training on how to handle protesters. The lack of detail provided by Cele suggests that Ntumba will remain a statistic of alleged police brutality, which has been topical in recent months.
