Carol Bouwer praises Mbokodo Award winner Nomzamo Mbatha

Nomzamo Mbatha was awarded the Rising Light Mbokodo award at the sixth annual Mbokodo Awards.

Former actress and businesswoman, Carol Bouwer took to social media on Friday to laud winner of the Rising Light Mbokodo Award, Nomzamo Mbatha. Bouwer is the creator and organiser of the awards ceremony, which is now in its seventh year.

Bouwer posted a video of Mbatha to her Instagram in which the actress reflects on being awarded the Rising Light plaque. Mbatha ends the clip by saying that she positive about the future of South Africa because of the influence of powerful, talented women in all communities.

Bouwer captioned the post, “MBOKODO AWARD WINNER NOMZAMO MBATHA decided to define the words: ‘No mountain too high…’ Discovering that she had won, she bridged the distance between New York City and Durban using technology. My angel you are the epitome of a life lived with purpose. The audience appreciated how you respected them by not only asking your beautiful and kind Mom to spend time with us but you also sent a message that reminded us that you are always present and you carry your people in your heart, no matter where you are. I also want to commend your dynamic agent who is proving to be one of the best the country has seen! @pumzano 🙏🏽💖🌺 Mbokodo Magic is your lot and you both display that with purpose and warmth. The country loves you Sisi and we pride ourselves with young women like you! All my love angel @nomzamo_m️.” At the time of the ceremony Mbatha was in New York attending Black Girls Rock and Afropunk Festival. Her mother accepted her award on her behalf.

The Mbokodo awards honour South African women who have made an exceptional contribution to the arts across various platforms and disciplines. Speaking on the purpose of the awards, Bouwer said, “The arts play a catalytic role in national dialogue on intimate femicide and all other abuses against women, and we say to these women you are more than enough, and your work is important. Keep creating!”
