BLSA champions reduced wage costs over job cuts

Published on

The BLSA is endorsing reduced wage costs over job cuts, as the country’s remuneration of public servants is reportedly high by international standards.

Business Leadership South Africa’s (BLSA) Busi Mavuso took to Twitter on Thursday, 12 November 2020, to circulate her latest thought piece. The article focuses on the topical matter of wage increases or the increasingly high possibility of mass unemployment. In her piece, Mavuso leans more towards the proposition of wage freezes, which has been proposed by the Minister of Finance, Tito Mbownei for all public sector workers.

According to Mavuso, “The average remuneration of public servants in South Africa is high by international standards and when compared to private sector employees and per capita gross domestic product. Something has to give.”

Mavuso also stipulated that the high standard of public wages is not justified by the output, hence her stance and support for reduced wage costs through a reduction of public sector salaries. Her line of thinking seeks to keep the jobs of the majority, rather than having a high-earning select few.
