Bheki Cele condemns “lawlessness” of Senekal protesters

Published on

The Police Department has issued a statement addressing the Senekal Magistrate’s Court incident, with Bheki Cele condemning the “lawlessness” of the protesters.

The Ministry of Police, led by Minister Bheki Cele, released a statement on Tuesday, 6 October 2020, detailing its stance on the recent Senekal Magistrate’s Court incident. The statement starts off by asserting that Cele is calling for the arrest of the lawless protesters behind the violence and vandalism that took place earlier in the day.

The statement then continued to reiterate the sentiments expressed by Minister Ronald Lamola in his statement on the matter. Much like Cele, Lamola also strongly condemned the actions of the protesters. According to the statement, Cele commented, “There is no logic when these protestors burn a police van, which is the same resource that is meant to assist them. It is also baffling why the anger of this community is being directed towards the police, when arrests have been made by the police and the suspects are before the courts.”

Cele then went on to caution the public against taking the law into their own hands, further adding that the right to protest is not absolute and it comes with responsibilities.
