Published on

Bongekile Simelane, better known as Babes Wodumo, has on Monday, 4 March 2019, opened an assault case against her boyfriend and manager Mandla Maphumulo, known as Mampintsha.

On Monday, 4 March 2019, an Instagram live video posted by Babes Wodumo went viral, as Babes’ boyfriend appeared to be physically attacking her.

Local celebrities such as Boity, DJ Zinhle and Sizwe Dhlomo spoke up against the alleged abuse, expressing their disapproval of Mampintsha’s actions and calling for his immediate arrest. The video has since been deleted off Babes Wodumo’s page but had gone viral before its removal.

A national call was sent to Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, urging him to take immediate action against Mampintsha. In a social media statement, Mthethwa said “We’re absolutely horrified by the actions of musician Mampintsha caught on video where he brutally abuses internationally celebrated artist Babes Wodumo. We do not only condemn this senseless act, but call on Babes Wodumo to immediately press charges against him.”

On Monday afternoon, 4 March 2019, Babes Wodumo was accompanied by members of the ANC Women’s League, where she opened a case of assault at the Westville Police Station.

Babes Wodumo’s father, Reverend Mbongeni Simelane, spoke out, calling for Mampintsha’s arrest. Speaking to eNCA, he expressed that this was not Mampintsha’s first time physically assaulting his daughter. “She told me that ‘babaz, Mandla is abusing me. If Mandla sees any [man] around me, Mandla is going to fight. He even beats me in front of my dancers,’” said Simelane.

Babes Wodumo is expected to give a media briefing on Tuesday, 5 March 2019.
