ATM notes but does not support the incarceration of Jacob Zuma

Published on

The ATM has noted the incarceration of former president, Jacob Zuma, but has also referred to the situation as embarrassing and indicative of unfairness of law in his case.

On Thursday, 8 July 2021, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) issued a statement noting the incarceration of former president, Jacob Zuma. Furthermore, the party stated that it believes that the incarceration of Jacob Zuma was a sad day for the history of the democracy of the country, given that Zuma is an “elderly and frail former statesman” and has been sentenced to 15 months in prison in the middle of the third wave of a pandemic.

The ATM referred to the situation as an embarrassing debacle, stating that it could have been avoided. The party also applauded Zuma for what it has called a courageous and selfless act, for choosing to hand himself over to a correctional facility in compliance with the law, regardless of his or the people’s personal convictions on the fairness of the law in his case.

ATM further stated that the actions of Jacob Zuma are of sacrifice that has definitely saved a potential loss of life, and what the ATM believes would have been another massacre under a Black-led democracy of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
