Faiez Jacobs took to Twitter to call on the IPID to investigate the matter of the supposed bias and heavy-handedness of the SAPS against peaceful protesters.
The African National Congress’ (ANC) Member of Parliament (MP), Faiez Jacobs took to Twitter on Wednesday, 24 February 2021, to call on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to investigate the reported heavy-handedness of the South African Police Service (SAPS). Jacobs’ stance was in reaction to a tweet on the SAPS’ approach to protesters, with the suggestion that it is impacted by socio-economic and racial lines. This comes after peaceful protesters outside the National Assembly were allegedly violently removed by the SAPS.
This is reportedly different from how the protest action by predominantly White people have been handled, particularly during the pandemic. Visuals from the protest action by beachgoers showcased the SAPS monitoring the situation without firearms pulled out or any form of threat of violence.
Therefore, Jacobs has called on IPID to investigate the matter. However, given that this is not the first time that the matter has been highlighted, the likelihood of the investigation taking place is slim.
