The ANC has congratulated the new Zambian President, Hichilema, and the UPND for their successful election and hopes of a continued vision of the late Dr. Kaunda.
The African National Congress (ANC) issued a statement on Thursday, 19 August 2021, congratulating Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema. The party stated that it welcomes the Zambian Electoral Commission’s declaration of Hichilema as the president and the United Party for National Development (UPND), following the general elections on Thursday, 12 August 2021.
The ANC commended the outgoing president, Edgar Lungu for accepting the outcomes of the elections and reassuring his successor of a smooth handover. Moreover, for noting that democracy in the African continent is consolidating. The ANC also made it known that an African Union’s (AU) short-term observation team, led by Dr Ernest Bai Koroma and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Observer Mission, had assessed the Zambian elections and found them to have been free and fair and conducted in a transparent and professional manner.
The ANC further conveyed that it wishes the new president success in his quest to develop and unite all people of Zambia behind the vision of its late founding president, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda of “One Zambia, One Nation”. Further, in the attainment of Zambia’s developmental goals. The ANC expressed gratitude for Zambia’s contributions during the liberation struggle.
