ANC to approach electoral court on challenges with IEC candidate registration

Published on

The ANC has reported that it experienced some challenges with its IEC candidate registration process, which would possibly result in the exclusion of ANC candidates in around 35 municipalities.

The ruling party issued a statement on Thursday, 26 August 2021, regarding candidate registration and the electoral court. The ANC conveyed that the process of registering its candidates with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) had some serious challenges on Monday, 23 August 2021.

The party has assured that it is assessing the impact of the noted challenges and the way forward. The ANC announced that it would be approaching the electoral court to re-open the process for at least a day, in order for the necessary corrections and additions to be made. According to the party, challenges were caused by a combination of factors, many of which were out of its control and resulted in their deadlines being difficult to meet.

Some candidate IDs are reported to have been rejected, as a result of the IEC system repeatedly freezing and locking out administrators in the final hours before the deadline. The ANC has explained that the impact of this would ultimately result in voters not being able to vote for the ANC in around 35 municipalities, which could lead to a change in government.
