The ruling party has temporarily suspended the membership of mayor Jostina Mothibe, pending disciplinary proceedings against her. Grace Magole has been appointed as the acting municipal manager.
The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West has reportedly temporarily suspended the membership of the mayor of Madibeng, Jostina Mothibe. The announcement of Mothibe’s suspension came after a special council meeting on Thursday afternoon, 2 May 2019, which she did not attend.
In a statement, the provincial task team (PTT) coordinator Mmamaloko Kubayi-Ngubane said although the decision was difficult, it had to be made.
“This difficult but necessary decision was taken to protect the integrity and the decorum of the organisation. Cader Jostinah Mothibe has been informed of her suspension and the conditions to which she has to abide during this suspension. We will ensure that various measures are put in place to ensure that service delivery is not affected and to restore services to the community of Madibeng.”
“Disciplinary proceedings will be instituted against her by the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee [NDC].
“Mothibi was one of the mayors who were embroiled in the VBS Mutual Bank saga who were recalled by the ANC in December 2018, following the controversial and unlawful investment into the Venda Bank by numerous municipalities. In a statement issued by the ANC at the time, it said that “there must be criminal charges preferred against those involved …”
However, Mothibe did not leave office and the municipality said at the time that Mothibe had not received a formal directive from the ANC.
Following Mothibe’s suspension, a new acting municipal manager, Grace Magole, was appointed during the council meeting on Thursday, 2 May 2019.
