ANC responds to Magashule’s suspension of Ramaphosa

Published on

The ANC has issued a statement acknowledging that suspended SG, Ace Magashule has suspended party president, Cyril Ramaphosa; a matter which it will meet to discuss this weekend.

The African National Congress (ANC) took to Twitter on Wednesday, 5 May 2021, to confirm the immediate suspension of its current Secretary-General (SG), Ace Magashule. The statement comes after the SG received an extension on the 30-day stepside resolution. It was previously suggested that he had no intention to step aside, as he appeared to be attempting to gain the support of former presidents of the ruling party.

In what is believed to be an act of retaliation, Magashule subsequently suspended party president, Cyril Ramaphosa. Magashule based his suspension on the same grounds, considering that Ramaphosa has been implicated in corruption but has never been charged.

The ANC has since clarified that Ramaphosa is still the sitting president and that the SG’s suspension stands. The statement read, “The (National Executive Committee) NEC will be meeting over the weekend and will accordingly respond to the Secretary-General.”
