The AIC has lambasted a decision by the EFF to vote against Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Athol Trollip saying that it disrupts the running of the city.
African Independent Congress (AIC) leader and Member of Parliament, Mandlenkosi Galo, says that political parties are responsible for political instability in the city, saying that “The ANC [African National Congress] and the EFF [Economic Freedom Fighters] will not accept any stability under the leadership of Athol Trollip which is a sorry kind of state.”
“Only the individuals who are the members of the ANC, members of the EFF and the other political parties… disrupt the smooth running of that particular municipality,” he added.
Trollip is facing a vote of no confidence against him.
EFF leader, Julius Malema announced earlier this month that his party took the decision to oust Trollip after the Democratic Alliance (DA) in parliament refused to support the EFF’s motion of land expropriation without compensation.
The AIC came out in support of Trollip on 28 March 2018.
Galo says that the decision by his party to offer a lifeline to the Mayor was taken after the ANC in the Eastern Cape reneged on its agreement with the AIC to incorporate the Matatiele municipality into Kwa-Zulu Natal.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Council meeting on 29 March 2018 was postponed by Speaker, Jonathan Lawack after the EFF accused him of trying to collapse the meeting. This was after Lawack refused to make the motion of no confidence the first item on the agenda.
Earlier in the day, the meeting was also disrupted when opposition parties demanded that DA Leader, Mmusi Maimane leave the council chamber.
