AfriForum has announced that it will appeal the ruling in the Thandi Modise case, who recently appeared in court on charges of animal abuse.
AfriForum’s Ernst Roets took to Twitter on Monday, 3 May 2021, to circulate a statement affirming the intentions of the civil rights organisation to appeal the verdict in Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modise’s case. Modise appeared on charges of animal abuse at the Potchefstroom Regional Court for her allegedly malnourished and dead animals, which were reportedly found emaciated. Represented by Advocate Dali Mpofu, Modise was found innocent on all charges against her on Friday, 30 April 2021.
Following the news, AriForm penned a statement revealing that it will appeal the verdict, claiming that there are enough grounds to do so. According to the statement, “Dr Theo de Jager, Board Chairperson of the family farming organisation Saai, says the case against Modise creates great confusion in the agricultural sector about where the accountability and responsibility of cattle farmers lie with regards to the welfare of animals.”
