ActionSA’s Gauteng Campaign Manager, Abel Tau has called on the City of Tshwane mayor to step down, as his lack of leadership is said to have resulted in a poor Moody’s rating.
On Thursday, 1 July 2021, ActionSA’s Abel Tau released a press statement, calling on the City of Tshwane’s “ghost mayor,” Randall Williams to step down from office. This call follows Moody’s International slashing the City of Tshwane’s sovereign rating, assigning it a Caa2 junk status, fourth from bottom on its ranking system.
Moody’s claimed that an unexpected cash deficit of more than R1 billion was behind this decision, with further downgrades expected in the future. Tau has emphasised that this latest downgrade is an indication of the deteriorating financial position of the city, following a previous downgrade in April. With the continued absence of the mayor, Tau and ActionSA believe that the city will be best served with his stepping down.
Referring to Williams as a “ghost mayor,” Tau claimed that Williams has offered the city nothing except his absence and lack of leadership. Williams has reportedly remained silent on the issues faced by the metro. According to ActionSA, this is a demonstration of the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) lack of depth in leadership to deliver services to the people. Tau also stressed that he believes that Tshwane cannot operate on autopilot anymore.
