ActionSA calls out City of Tshwane for refusing to relocate Mamelodi flood victims

ActionSA has called out the DA-led City of Tshwane for refusing to relocate and house victims of the Mamelodi floods, as relocation plans have not been delivered on.

ActionSA’s Abel Tau issued a statement on Tuesday, 14 September 2021, noting that the party has learnt that the Democratic Alliance (DA)-led City of Tshwane refused to relocate and house the Mamelodi flood victims. According to the party, the flood victims have not had a place to stay since 29 December 2019.

Tau stated that at the time, a relocation plan had been proposed but then abandoned by the city. A new plan is said to have been developed but produced no results. Tau also called out Mayor Randall Williams for not being bothered by the plight of the city.

ActionSA is of the view that the city was hoping that these affected residents would quietly vacate and that the problem would not have to be resolved. The party also believes that the flood victims have every right to call on government to act on their cries.

See the post below.

How many victims were affected by the Mamelodi floods?

ActionSA noted that of the 790 families affected by the floods, only 192 would be accommodated in the city’s relocation plans, while the remaining 598 would be left in limbo.

According to ActionSA, what promises were made to victims?

ActionSA stated that the Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura had sworn to move the affected families to a safe space as a matter of urgency back in 2019. All proposed relocation plans have consistently been abandoned by the city.

What action plans would ActionSA implement in helping Mamelodi flood victims?

ActionSA stated that it would set out to mandate municipalities to provide temporary emergency accommodation to victims of disasters, and increase allocations for the provision of site and service stands for communities to build secure homes and to address Tshwane’s housing crisis.
