Herman Mashaba took to Twitter to call on the IEC and Home Affairs to look into the highlighted suspicions of irregular voter registrations through the alleged use of IDs of the deceased.
Leader of ActionSA, Herman Mashaba took to Twitter on Wednesday, 14 April 2021, to call on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Home Affairs to probe the suggestions of electoral registration tampering. The first time that the party raised alarm on the matter was earlier in the week, when it reported on an alleged African National Congress (ANC) supporter with well over 100 identity documents (ID) of supposed eligible voters for the upcoming local elections.
Following the revelation, another Twitter user claimed that a similar incident took place in Wynberg. Moreover, the user suggested that the alleged ANC members may have used the IDs of the deceased from the Life Esidimeni saga, so as to allegedly register fake profiles to vote for the ruling party.
It is still unclear whether the IEC and Home Affairs will look into the matter, more so considering that the implicated man in the video was not wearing ANC regalia. As such, the allegations could be considered mudslinging ahead of the elections because of the lack of corroborating evidence.
