The ACDP has expressed its beliefs that the whole security cluster should be fired for the lapses and incompetence in responding to July’s unrest.
On Tuesday, 24 August 2021, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) expressed that it believes the looting and destruction of property in parts of the country has exposed an appalling weakness within the government’s intelligence sector. Leader of the ACDP, Kenneth Meshoe addressed Parliament, stating that the security cluster should have been fired for its incompetence.
Meshoe, in his speech, noted that what was most disturbing about the events of July was the fact that in the first three days of the looting and destruction, not a single police officer was seen anywhere, including the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele. Meshoe also conveyed that just like many South Africans, the ACDP believes that the events of July have exposed weakness in the government’s intelligence sector, noting that social media had been filled with hints and threats leading up to the events.
Furthermore, the party believes that those hints and threats should have been contained more effectively by the police, had they been ready. The ACDP also expressed its disappointment in there being no issuing of any heavy penalties for the security cluster, and emphasised how the whole cluster had failed the entire nation and, therefore, needs to be fired for the lapses and incompetence.
