On Saturday, 10 February, Phiva faced Chippa United at Kabokweni Stadium in Mpumalanga – one of the five games played on Saturday. Chippa United achieved an easy 2-0 victory against the ABC Motsepe League side. Defender, Ayabulela Konqobe, opened the scoring in the 12th minute and Linda Mtambo sealing the victory in the 29th minute. Chippa United move to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup with some confidence – though they ought to not place too much value on the win against what is truly a minnow side.
Steenberg United faced Orbit College at Parow Park in Cape Town. Steenberg United was in charge from the 9th minute when Mika-iel Hendricks opened the scoring in the 9th minute, and Waseem George extended that lead in the 40th minute, and Hendricks scored his second goal in the 76th minute. Orbit College responded a minute later, but it was not enough, and Steenberg United walked away with a 3-1 victory, cruising to the last 16 of the Nebank Cup.
Moroka Swallows also hosted Maritzburg United over the weekend, at Dobsonville Stadium. The Dube Birds’ sad story continues to write another chapter – the Maritzburg side convincingly defeated the once prestigious Moroka Swallows team, 3-1 was the final score. Maritzburg United was in charge from the 3rd minute through an Andréa Filleccia goal. Swallows responded in the 35th when Tsepho Mashego hit the target, but Filleccia and Mxolosi Kunene ensured that it was an emphatic Maritzburg United victory, scoring in the 98th and 113th minute, respectively.
Orlando Stadium was also abuzz on Saturday, when Orlando Pirates hosted fellow PSL side, Ajax Cape Town. The match was a welcome relief, and promised an evenhanded challenge – not the top tier vs. second tier side scenario typically associated with clashes in the earlier stages of the Nedbank – this was a game between equals. Pirates, however, were ready to play and dominated Ajax Cape Town, routing them with a 2-0 score. Bernard Morrison scored both goals, the first in the 42nd minute and the second, 6 minutes later. Judging by Pirates form in this game, whomever they face in the next round of the Nedbank Cup should be worried – the Buccaneers are on form.
Free State Stars were supposed to play Super Eagles at Goble Park in Bethlehem; however, heavy rain and a soaked pitch meant that the game had to be cancelled. The game will now be played on Wednesday, 14 February 2018.
